AENG 453 – Design Studio 3
The design task was to design a work-live-sell environment inspired by the old Cairo concept of ‘Wekala’. The design process was divided into stages: extensive site analysis, sustainable wall concept design, cluster design and at the end the master plan.
My main design concept was to provide ‘Shelter not enclosure’. This was accomplished by challenging the ordinary building conventions and create a universal space with minimum enclosures. The platforms were put in different levels to ensure privacy. Minimalistic walls and acoustic buffers were only used when needed. The design was inspired by its context: the desert + new emerging developments.
The roof and wall sustainable concept were inspired by nature: ‘biomimcry’. It was used to increase the exposed mass and decrease the heat transmission.
